MAKHOSI DAY — LEAVE SOMETHING BEHIND
“When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.”
— Deuteronomy 24:19
Today is Makhosi Day.
Every Thursday, the poor and destitute make their way from business to business, asking for whatever a business or individual can afford to spare.
Sometimes it is easy for us to become accustomed to seeing them.
But today's Scripture asks us to see them again.
Long before there were welfare systems and feeding schemes, God instructed His people not to harvest everything for themselves. Something was deliberately to be left behind for the foreigner, the orphan and the widow.
There was to be room in the harvest for somebody else.
That is the spirit in which we should approach Makhosi Day.
Not merely as another Thursday when people come asking, but as an opportunity to develop a heart of compassion.
Perhaps today we can give a little more patiently.
Listen a little more carefully.
Look someone in the eye.
Share what we can.
Because compassion is more than what leaves our hands.
It is what happens in our hearts when we truly see another person's need.

And perhaps the ancient instruction from the fields still speaks to us today:
Don't gather everything for yourself.
Leave something for somebody else.
